As many of you will know, we formed Team James in January 2016 when my son, James, decided to turn his rehab into a charity event to raise money for Barretstown. The initiative has gone from strength to strength ever since and I am very proud of what everyone associated with Team James has achieved over the last 18 months.
In this section of the website I will keep you all updated about what is happening with Team James, fundraising opportunities, the regular training and occasional mischief that James gets into in his pursuit to raise as much as possible for the wonderful Barretstown.
James was the youngest ever participant in the history of Dublin City Marathon last year and Team James also completed a series of other races including Dublin Rock and Roll Half Marathon, Raheny 5mile and Womens Mini Marathon – to date we have raised more than €70,000 for Barretstown and already have many more events in the pipeline.
I also serve as an ambassador for Barretstown and cannot speak highly enough about the work that is done there. We first went to Barretstown as a family after a hospital referral when James became sick, it offers free, specially designed camps and programmes for children and their families living with a serious illness – supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care.
All of the children and families attend Barretstown free of charge, everything including accommodation, food and medical assistance are provided at no cost to the family and Barretstown is supported by donations and the fundraising efforts of corporate supporters, individuals and community groups. It is recognised as a centre of excellence in childhood cancer care and other serious illnesses. Children are referred to Barretstown based on their medical needs
Barretstown’s mission is to rebuild the lives of children affected by serious illness and their families. Since Barretstown first opened its gates in 1994 they have brought the magic of this wonderful facility to over 30,000 campers.
I hope that you will join us on our journey as Team James raises money for this great cause….
Cllr Vicki Casserly
